FAQ

Q: The story of Wished is very interesting and has a big imagination. Were the 19 wishes in the film all wishes the director made when he was a child?

A: No. This original screenplay was written by Justin Malen and Dayyan Eng. Some of the wishes were indeed wishes they made when they were children, but during the roadshow, Director Wu said: “Those… adolescent wishes were… Pan Binlong’s and Xia Yu’s — they have nothing to do with me!”

Q: Is Wished a sequel to Waiting Alone? What relationship does it have to Waiting Alone?

A: There is absolutely no relationship, and they are not even the same type of film. Waiting Alone is a more grounded romantic comedy, while Wished is a purely fantasy comedy film. The only things the two films have in common are that they were directed by the same director and star the same male actor. The story content and character settings are completely different.

Q: I heard Wished is Director Dayyan Eng’s film after 12 years. Did he really not make a film for that long?

A: It is not that he only made a film again after 12 years. What is true is that it was his first comedy again after 12 years. In between, Director Wu also made the psychological suspense film Inseparable.

Q: Was the delivery company that appears in Wished a product placement? How much did they pay the production?

A: Director Wu once said, “We didn’t take a single cent from any delivery company!” Indeed, because of the needs of the story, Li Fei, played by Pan Binlong, is an employee of a delivery company, so the film needed him to drive a delivery van and occasionally wear a delivery uniform. Director Wu also said: “Li Fei has to work for some company! We’re not a big-budget film. If we made up a delivery company, the costume and props departments would actually have had to spend more money. Later we decided we might as well find a real delivery company and borrow their location, vehicles, and uniforms — if anyone says we took money for product placement, I’ll fight them! Some irresponsible so-called film critics even ‘deducted a lot of points’ from our film because of this. They wrote nonsense without asking carefully. Am I, Old Wu, such a tasteless person!?”

Q: Megaton is so funny. Was he voiced by Wang Baoqiang?

A: Yes!

Q: I really like the music in Wished, especially the dance track when Ma Fendou and Shanshan dance. I couldn’t find it before!

A: All the tracks that could not be found were original music the director had the composer create. During the theatrical release they could not be found online, but we later released an OST soundtrack album. You can search for it on major online platforms! For the non-original insert songs, you can look here: [Wished insert song list]

Q: I really love Wished. Could there be a sequel?

A: In the future, if audiences are willing to watch it, it is indeed possible that there could be a sequel. The story content and outline for a sequel already exist, but because Director Wu needs to work on other projects first, nothing has been decided for the time being. But the editor can reveal a secret: Director Wu may very possibly executive produce a TV version of Wished, so please stay tuned!

Q: I saw in the news that Wished might be remade in Hollywood. Is that true?

A: Wished has indeed become one of the few Chinese films whose remake rights were purchased by a Hollywood company! But who will star in it, who will direct it, and when it might actually get made, we do not know. If there is any news, we will definitely share it with everyone right away.
